Just a few months after opening the doors to Jane and the Lion Bakehouse in the Heights, chef Jane Wild is relaunching her Jane’s Dine Inn monthly supper series, now called Jane’s Bakehouse Dine Inn. The series, which will feature a multi-course family-style meal that reflects the bounty of the season and chef Jane’s relationships with local purveyors, kicks off on Friday, September 12 with Whitehurst Farm. Each dinner begins at 6 p.m., kicking off with a cocktail hour, followed by the seated meal at 7 p.m. Tickets are $111 per person, with beverage pairings available for an additional cost, and can be purchased at janesdineinn.com.

Handies Douzo is honoring the grand opening of its new Spring Branch location at 9936 Westview Dr., with a festive celebration on the weekend of September 12-14. A local dance troupe will perform a traditional Lion Dance at 7 p.m. on Friday, followed by a sake ceremony led by sake sommelier Donna Ma, sponsored by Dassai Blue Sake. The celebration will continue as Handies is offering half of crudos all weekend.

Blue Claw Seafood Restaurant & Bar is opening its first Texas location at 13232 Northwest Freeway in the former Red Lobster space on Sunday, September 21. The coastal-inspired restaurant from the Ye’s Group of Companies, a Canadian seafood and hospitality enterprise, showcases premium, sustainably sourced seafood, including lobster directly supplied by the group’s proprietary fisheries in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. When it opens, Blue Claw will operate from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Happenings

Asia Society Texas and Bank of America’s Women’s Leadership Series is presenting a special luncheon with Mithu Malik, co-owner of the MICHELIN-starred Indian restaurant, Musaafer on Thursday, September 12 at noon. During the luncheon, Malik will share her journey of becoming a global hospitality entrepreneur and building Musaafer alongside her husband into an international culinary brand. Tickets may be purchased at asiasociety.org/texas/events.

Houston-area locations of Little Woodrow’s are kicking off Oktoberfest celebrations this month, beginning Saturday, September 13 and lasting through Saturday, September 27. Guests are welcome to participate in stein hoisting competitions for cash prizes, Little Woodrow’s gift cards, and Samuel Adams commemorative steins. The traditional Bavarian-inspired strength challenge features participants holding a liter of beer parallel to the ground for as long as possible. Local Daschshund owners are also welcome to register their pets in the Dachtoberfest Weiner Dog Races, happening at Little Woodrow’s EaDo, Tomball and Webster locations.

Montrose Cheese & Wine is hosting Raclizzy Glizzies on Saturday, September 13, beginning at 1 p.m. Guests can enjoy hot raclette, pulled to order, atop Full Tilt hot dogs on a Slow Dough pretzel hoagie, with a side of sesame slaw and mustard.

Azumi is hosting a bluefin tuna carving experience on Tuesday, September 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. Along with getting an up close look at the carving of an entire bluefin tuna, guests can roam interactive stations serving freshly prepared sashimi, hand rolls, and nigiri, plus premium sake pairings and a dessert station. The cost is $150 per person, with tickets available via Eventbrite

On the Menu

Caracol continues its tasting menu series highlighting Mexico’s states with the sixth stop spotlighting the flavors of Jalisco. The four-course tasting menu is offered during dinner service Monday-Saturday through Saturday, September 27 and includes dishes like pozole blanco and birria. The cost is $75 per person, with the option to add beverage pairings for $36.

Voodoo Doughnut has launched two new limited time creations ahead of the fall season: the pumpkin spice latte doughnut and the pumpkin buttermilk bar, available at participating locations through Monday, November 3. The pumpkin spice latte doughnut is filled with pumpkin spice fluff, dipped in bold Magic Roast espresso frosting, and topped with a swirl of decadent caramel frosting; while the pumpkin buttermilk bar is a pumpkin-shaped twist on the classic buttermilk bar, with crisp edges, a soft cake center, and sweet and subtly spiced pumpkin flavor.

As part of Dessert Gallery’s ongoing 30th anniversary celebration, the bakery is offering its carrot cake by the slice at its 1995 price of $4.95 to the first 30 guests that order it during the week of September 8-12. Celebrations continue on the weekend of September 19-21 when Dessert Gallery’s Kirby location will be decorated with a balloon arch, birthday balloons throughout the shop, and a photo wall to commemorate your visit.
